Cary Schoolhouse Preservation

The Schoolhouse

We’ve been working with the Town of Cary to preserve 18 historic structures; one of which was a schoolhouse for some 50-years. This structure dates to the 1930s. Originally used as a dwelling, then a kitchen in service to a larger home, and then a schoolhouse from 1862 to 1912 where area children paid to attend school taught by Ms. Carrie Jones.

The Structure

The structure sits atop stacked quartz footings; no anchors or mortar, just sitting for the last 190 years.

Joints

The woodwork showcases saddle joints, lap joints, and mortise and tenon.

Chimney

The chimney is especially unique; composed of stacked fieldstone collected from what was found in the farm fields. It was in poor condition with mortar that had literally turned to powder. Through much investigative work and skilled craftsmanship, we were able to stabilize this structure.
